Personalization of marketing campaigns is driving many businesses to new heights of success. When compared to a generic campaign, or even a campaign that is based on a targeted segment, the personalized campaign leads to a dramatically better results. Two industries that have widely adopted a personalization strategy are financial services and specialty retailers. According to AMR Research Inc., both industries have experienced tremendous results: 20-30% average uplift on personalized campaigns versus the average uplift of .05%.

A specialty retailer used clickstream analysis to see what customers were viewing on their website. Once a customer viewed the same product more than three times, they were sent a 10% off coupon for that product. Uplift on this campaign was 15% higher than previous campaigns that had been based solely on target segmentation.

Another specialty retailer focused on the comments in the "attach a card" section of their website. If the text in the card read "Happy Birthday," approximately two weeks before that same date a year later, a personalized campaign was launched that offered a product that complemented the one purchased the previous years (i.e. a necklace to match earrings).
