“Yes, Yes, Yes”
Answer 6 Questions & See If You’re Building an Effective Communications Strategy!
Crafting your communications program is integrally important to leverage your reputation, advance your corporate objectives and preserve the goodwill toward your brand. All world-class corporations spend significant time, money and effort in managing their communications. So why shouldn’t your world-class organization do the same?
You’re on the right track if you can answer “yes” to all of the following questions:
- Do you have a communications plan? All public relations and communications functions should be integrated into a single department or are closely coordinated in their actions.
- Is there a single individual or department in your company who manages all communications with the media? The senior communications person should have ready access to the senior managers with greatest power in the organization.
- Do your key communications personnel have some type of formal training in Marketing Communications and/or Public Relations? If possible, a communications department or executive should be educated in public relations, active in professional associations, and up-to-date on professional literature in communications.
- Do you make sure our messages to suppliers, customers, employees, and shareholders are consistent, correct and support your vision, mission and values? Your corporate communications should reflect genuine actions, practices and commitment to ethics.
- Do you track, analyze and measure all comments about your company in the media and quickly correct misinformation? Make sure your communications plan builds in components of research, measurement and ongoing evaluation for maximum effectiveness.
- Are you proactive in telling the good news and have a crisis plan to respond during times of bad news? Responding inappropriately during a crisis can cause irreparable damage to your reputation and credibility.
Playing it fast and loose with your communications strategy can lead to a very real risk of damaging your credibility, losing sales and reducing employee productivity. So make a credible plan and stick with it in both good times and bad.
