Postal Rates Set To Increase This Month

Savvy Direct Mailers Will Keep On Mailing

With the increase of postal rates scheduled to take effect early this January, some businesses may mistakenly be planning to decrease their direct mail volumes in 2006. Current rates will rise by only a minimal amount (a two-cent increase for a first class letter and a one-cent increase for postcards). Even with the increase in rates, direct mail is still an affordable and important marketing media to use in your 2006 marketing plan. With response rates reaching as high as 7% in some industries, direct mail is too valuable a tool to cut back on.

Instead of cutting back on your direct mail volume, consider these cost-saving alternatives:

  • Improve your list hygiene, cutting down on bad addresses, opt-outs or unqualified prospects will cut list volume without sacrificing list quality.
  • Try sticking with standard sizes and shapes for your direct mail pieces. If you mail a standard 6 x 4 postcard versus a 7 x 5 postcard you will keep your postage costs lower. You’ll also save on printing costs as well.
  • If you plan your mailings far enough in advance and can allow for a longer timeline, consider mailing bulk rate instead of first-class and you may save 40-50% of your postage costs.
  • Co-mail with other companies that are sending out similar mailings.
